Police warning after conmen prey on 92-year-old pensioner in Northern Moor

Police are warning people to be on their guard after a 92-year-old man fell victim to bogus callers in Wyhenshawe.

The conmen struck at about 2.15pm on 14 March 2013 when the victim answered the door to two men at his house on Raymond Road, Northern Moor.

They claimed they needed to check his water as they were working on the plumbing of a neighbour’s house.

One of the men took him to the kitchen where he fiddled with the tap, running the water for many minutes, and allowing the other to remain on the doorstep. While there the victim said he thought he heard something at the front of the house but the bogus official told him it was nothing.

Both offenders eventually left the house. The victim then realised someone had been upstairs and removed a quantity of cash from a bedroom cabinet.

It is believed the same pair may have targeted other victims in the area and later that same day a white van was seen circling in the area.

Both offenders were white, of average build and in their mid 20s with a local accent. One wore a baseball cap while the other wore a white baseball cap.

Detective Constable Catherine Campbell, said:: “This man was duped by a cynical duo of desperate conmen. It is important to be cautious when opening the door to anyone who you don’t know. Put the chain on the door and ask them who they are and what they want.

“The water board has not existed for a number of years, so if they say they are from the water board then you will know they are bogus. People without an appointment or identification should be treated as suspicious.

“Don’t let them in your home, tell them to go away and don’t be afraid to call the police if you have any concerns.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 5619 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
