Lord Alex? Wythenshawe MP calls for new title for Manchester United legend

gogginsWythenshawe MP, Paul Goggins has thrown his weight behind a bid to have retiring Manchester United manager, Alex Ferguson, elevated to a Lord.

The Labour MP is sponsoring an early day motion in parliament recognising the United manager’s “unparalleled success” and calling for him to be made a Lord.

The motion says: “That this House congratulates Sir Alex Ferguson on his unparalleled success as a manager of Aberdeen and Manchester United having won the Scottish premiership three times, the Scottish Cup four times, the Scottish League Cup, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and the UEFA Super Cup with Aberdeen and the Premier League 13 times, the FA Cup five times, the League Cup four times, the UEFA Champions League twice, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the Inter Continental Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and the FA Charity/Community Shield 10 times; and believes he should be immediately ennobled and elevated to the House of Lords.”

The 71-year-old announced yesterday he is to retire as United  boss at the end of the season after 26 years at Old Trafford. He is to be replaced by Everton’s David Moyes.

Mr Goggins has sponsored the parliamentary motion proposed by fellow Manchester MP Graham Stringer.

And Withington’s John Leech  has also put forward an EDM asking the House of Commons to note Sir Alex’s “outstanding contribution” to football.

The Liberal Democrat MP asked the Commons to further note “the joy he has brought to fans of Manchester United, and despair to fans of other teams” during his 26-year tenure.
