Wythenshawe councillor and firefighter get gongs in New Year’s honours list

Cllr-Sue-Murphy-2012-190x190Wythenshawe councillor Sue Murphy and Northenden firefighter David Lenagan has joined Manchester  football legends Denis Law and Francis Lee in the the 2016 New Year Year’s honours list.

Cllr Murphy, who is also Manchester City Council’s deputy leader was made  a CBE in this year’s honours list for political and public service.

The Brooklands councillor leads on family poverty issues and public service reform at the council and has previously been executive lead member for adult social care.

David Lenagan was awarded an OBE   for services to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and the Children’s
Burns Foundation.

Mr Lenagan has been a firefighter  since 1985 and became involved with burns charities in 1998  as a volunteer having been severely burned himself when he was two years old, spending many months in hospital. 

Treatment for his burns injuries continued throughout  childhood, and he underwent some surgery  a few years ago.

Through Burns Camps he has worked with  children who are struggling to come to terms with their own burn injuries and he has launched a just giving funding raising campaign for the Children’s Burns Foundation.

Manchester United goal machine, Denis Law and City legend, Francis Lee both received CBEs. Law, now aged 75, scored 237 goals in 404 appearances for United and Lee scored 148 goals helped City to the league title in his first season in May 1968.
